Everyone’s buzzing about Chhetri, but the 39-year-old wants the spotlight on the match, crucial for India’s advancement hopes and critical for their campaign. On Wednesday, Chhetri displayed a rare smile as he entered the packed room for the pre-match press conference.

Sunil Chhetri expressed his thoughts in a conference room, It’s not about me or my final match; it’s about us and Kuwait. Inside, I’m fighting this internal battle. “I’m really trying not to think of this game like that.” Please don’t make it harder by asking repeatedly how I feel. I don’t want to discuss it. We must win this game. It won’t be easy, but we’re ready. We’ll have huge support here in Kolkata.

“India Aims for Crucial Win to Ensure AFC Asian Cup 2027 Spot and Advance in World Cup Qualifiers”

At the top of the table is Asian champions Qatar with 12 points, India is currently ranked second in Group A with 4 points.  followed by Afghanistan in third place with four points but a lower goal difference than India, and Kuwait at the bottom with three points. The top two teams from each group will move on to the third round of qualifiers and secure direct qualification for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 in Saudi Arabia. A win would significantly boost India’s chances of advancing to the third round of World Cup qualifiers.

When questioned about retirement reconsideration, Chhetri emphasised upcoming matches. “A win tomorrow brings us closer to our goal. Five key matches await, home and away. Reflecting on 19 great years, I’ll now be a loyal fan, supporting the team wherever they play.”
