CM Majhi approved the opening of all four gates of Jagannath Temple, Puri

Synopsis : All four gates of the Puri’s Jagannath temple finally opened for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. These doors were opened after the “mangal arati” ritual of Lord Jagannath, in the presence of Odisha Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi.

On Thursday, after the “Mangal Arati”, BJP upholding its poll promise, decided to open three more gates of the 12th-century shrine, which were kept closed since the pandemic. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and other MPs visited the Lord Jagannath temple, offered prayers, and conducted ‘parikrama’ around the temple.

“The state government decided to re-open all the four gates of the Puri Jagannath temple early morning tomorrow in the presence of all ministers. Devotees will have access to the temple through all four gates,” Majhi said.

Proposal approved in first cabinet meeting

After 24-years Biju Janta Dal (BJD) rule, the BJP came to power in full force. Its poll manifesto included the opening of all the gates of Jagannath temple, Puri due to the problems faced by the general public. 

On Wednesday, the first cabinet meeting of the  BJP government echoed the rush and inconvenience caused to people. Mohan Charan Manjhi approved the proposal with immediate effect, and all four gates were opened on Thursday morning.

Inconvenience to the devotees, a major concern

The devotees were allowed to enter through the Singhdwara (Lion) gate only, as the other three gates (Ashwa Dwara, Vyaghra Dwara, Hasti Dwara) were closed. This caused major inconvenience to the devotees, creating chaos. 

“I am happy that the new government has kept its promise.”, a devotee reportedly expressed relief when the gates finally opened.

500 cr fund announced for restoration

Manjhi and the cabinet committed a fund of rupees 500 crores, for the conservation and preservation purpose of the Jagannath temple, Puri. proper allocation of funds was a major concern faced by the temple administration, which was also resolved with immediate effect.  

“The decision has been taken to facilitate smooth pilgrimage,” he said.
