Mumbai Hoarding Collapse: 14 lives lost, over 70 injured

Synopsis : The city of Mumbai saw unseasonal rains, and dusty storms which led to the collapse of hoarding at Ghatkopar. 14 were found dead and 70 were injured due to this. The hoardings did not have permission from civic officials.

Mumbai Hoarding Collapse: 14 lives lost, over 70 injured

The death toll in the hoarding collapse in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area is said to have risen to 14, whereas over 70 people were injured, the civic officials confirmed on Tuesday. According to reports, a heavy dust storm led to the collapse of giant hoarding. The officials stated that the hoarding was constructed without the permission of the civic body.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC) officials said they are in the process of rescuing and searching at the Chheda Nagar-based petrol pump on May 14 morning. The reports state that 31 people have been discharged from Hospital and 35 people are undergoing treatment while the other one person is undergoing treatment stated the BMC Official. 

BMC officials’ comment on  Giant Billboard collapse

The Giant billboard which collapsed on Tuesday, measured about 17,040 square feet and this was mentioned in the Limca Book of Records as the largest hoarding. According to BMC officials, there were four hoardings at that place and all of them were approved by the commissioner of police. (Railways Mumbai)

The civic body allows a hoarding size of a maximum of 40*40 square feet, the hoarding that collapsed was of size 120*120 square feet. BMC had issued the notice to the agency to remove all its hoardings with immediate effect, as it did not have valid permits and they have been objecting to hoardings for one year.
