The H9N2 bird flu virus has infected a four-year-old child in West Bengal, India, the World Health Organisation said. The patient was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit of a local hospital in February and was discharged three months later.

Symptoms similar to other viral infections

It has been noted, that the patient was exposed to poultry at home, and no other family members are reported to have any symptoms of the H9N2 bird flu virus. The symptoms are common to most of the other viral infections. Here, in this case, the underlying symptoms included high fever, abdominal cramps, and several respiratory issues.

H9N2 virus is common in poultry

The first case of the H9N2 virus infecting a human, in India was reported in 2019, and this happens to be the second case being reported in West Bengal.

Even though the virus supposedly causes mild illness, its powerful transmitting agency and the widespread presence in poultry across regions, make it a matter of immediate concern. This might lead to a sporadic rise in cases among humans, reported by health experts.

“Generally, H9N2 is less dangerous than other more virulent strains of avian influenza; but, because of its ability to disseminate and infect people, especially those who have close contact with birds, continuous surveillance and preventive measures are necessary,” underscored Dr Chakravorty.
