Bengaluru set to explore the feasibility of second airport, officials begin planning

Synopsis : Bengaluru is set to get a second airport as officials commence work on a feasibility study. This development aims to alleviate congestion at the existing Kempegowda International Airport and cater to the growing air traffic demands in the city.

MB Patil, Minister for Large and Medium Industries in Karnataka announced that the government is planning to construct a second international airport in Bengaluru. The officials are directed to submit a feasibility report for the new airport in the capital. 

The New Airport project

The minister stated the new airport will work for the needs of future flyers in a rapidly growing city like Bengaluru. Mr Patil called Kempegowda International Airport, the third busiest in India after Delhi and Mumbai. The airport managed 37.5 million passengers and over 4 lakh tonnes of cargo last year. There is massive pressure to facilitate a second airport to accommodate future growth.

Why an alternative airport in Bengaluru?

The CEO of Kempegowda International Airport, Hari Manar, wanted an alternative airport in Bengaluru. Hari Manar then stated that 92 million passengers are expected to board and deboard at Bengaluru annually in the next decade and there is a necessity of another airport. They are also planning for land acquisition for the new airport as it is going to be a challenge.

When was Terminal 2 launched?

In November 2022, a second terminal was launched in Kempegowda International airport that is now handling International airlines and Domestic airlines. The estimated cost of constructing the first phase of terminal 2 is reportedly INR 13,000 Crores and it has a built-up area of roughly 2.5 lakh square meters. Another 4.41 lakh square meters will be added to the terminal during the second phase.
